The biggest difference between a local move and an interstate one is time. Your belongings will spend hours on the road, and you may not arrive at the same time as the truck. Lock in pickup and delivery windows early and plan your own travel around them.
Pack for motion. On a long drive, loosely packed boxes shift and crush. Fill empty space in every carton, use dish packs for kitchenware, and pack heavy items in small boxes so they stay manageable and stackable.
Keep important things with you: documents, jewelry, medications, laptops, and anything irreplaceable. Everything else can travel with the crew.
Finally, measure at the new place if you can. Knowing whether the sofa fits up the stairs in a Raleigh townhouse or a Pittsburgh rowhouse before moving day saves a lot of problems at delivery.
